The Edge Final Stand.June 15, 2010, 9:57 pm It's been fun...five years of thrashing your mind with the loudest, most thunderous heavy metal that's ever been played by human beings. We reported from the front lines and from behind the scenes. We took some of you with us. We talked with some of the biggest and baddest to the freshest and frenziest. We've gone to the edge and beyond, once a week, every week for five years. We've been bashed in pits and roadtripped to Seattle, Portland, and Hollywood. We've been at your local dive bar, on stage and at the bar, kicking it with our bros from the Oregon Underground. We've seen it all. It started in 2005 as a nothing more than experiment...what happened if I turned Sunday nights UP...? Well, five years later the experiment worked. You guys made this show one of the BIGGEST radio shows in Eugene, for half a decade. We helped create a local metal scene that took Oregon by storm and we saw some unbelievable bands, heard some furious songs...but with all good things, they must come to an end. Sunday night was that time. With my insane schedule, I just couldn't focus on the show like it deserves anymore. Between helping run our websites to KFLY, my writing career and my band, We Have Guns, it was finally, simply, too much. So I decided to hang up my guns and prepare for one final stand. One massive show that would summarize where we've been, who we've met and who left us, along the way. We fired up the metal machine for one more Sunday. Back once more for four hours, Tobby and I took a look back at five years of fury, from the best heavy metal songs to the most candid interviews to the most insane stunts and prank calls with your favorite Oregon Underground bands...and closing with Down's "Nothing in Return (Walk Away)" we signed off. I will miss this show, surely. But no doubt, some other Jedi will take the reigns in the near future. And the Edge will return will all the aggression, passion and thunder it deserves. By no means will I be very far away. I'm a headbanger for life. And heavy metal never dies. I'll talk to you later. And I'll see you in the pit. The Day Dio Died. The Edge Pays Homage...May 16, 2010, 4:19 pm ![]() It all started last night around 11:20, just before SNL. I got a text from Blake from Northwest Royale that simply read: "RIP Dio." I replied: "Oh F#*k." Then I ran to the warroom in my apartment to check the web. The only thing I could find was a headline from Metal Underground, that wouldn't load, most likely because it was getting clicked by a million people all at once. I finally got through and it was a short blurb posted at 2:20ish that indeed RJD had died. No way. This just couldn't be. And Dio's official website wouldn't load either. It wasn't looking good. Then Blabbermouth posted that it was a hoax. I was at once relaxed to know Dio was still alive, but I also lost a little faith in the internet for posting such a horrible lie. Twitter and Facebook were exploding with confusion. It was cruel. And technically, at the point the story was posted, it was indeed incorrect. Dio was still alive. I was relieved. Until this morning. I read on a colleague's facebook this morning that while he was alive, he was not doing well. At 7:45 am this morning, doctors announced that Ronnie Jame Dio, had passed on at the age of 67. When I saw this post from his wife, Wendy, on Dio's official website, I knew it was real this time: "Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever. " - Wendy Dio I double checked Blabbermouth, and the story had changed. It was not a rumor now. Dio was dead. The New York Times corroborated the news. I threw "The Last in Line" on my stereo, turned it up loud, and I cried for a minute. It hit me fast and hard. So many images and songs went through my mind. One of my heroes had left us. While we all knew RJD was battling stomach cancer, it seemed like he was winning the fight. Tobby and I had even traveled to LA last month for the Revolver Golden Gods Awards, where we mere feet from Dio on the Black Carpet. He looked in great spirits and completely healthy. And when he accepted his Lifetime Achievement Award from Alice in Chains, the whole room exploded. The biggest crowd response of the night. And he even threw the devil horns straight at Tobby and me (at least we thought so, check the picture below and decide for yourself.) But now, the man who gave us "Holy Diver", "Rainbow in the Dark", the devil horns, and some ripping albums from Black Sabbath, Rainbow, and Elf had finally moved on the other side. We shall dedicate the entire two hours tonite to Ronnie James Dio. If Ronnie sang on it, we're playing it. Everything we've got in the library, plsu some from my own personal collection. We've also opened up the comments below for you to post your thoughts, prayers, stories and memories you've had with Dio's music or if you've ever met him, we'd love to read your tale. And feel free to share this page with your friends. Let's send this page to Dio's family and let 'em know we're thinking about him and listening loud. RIP DIO. You will never be forgotten.
Leave your thoughts for Dio below.

Vote for Portland's PROVEN in Scion's No Label Needed!February 19, 2010, 3:35 pm ![]() As many of you loyal EdgeMobbers know, Portland's most hardcore band, Proven has been a staple on the Edge since I took over the program some five years ago. And how far they've come... In true DIY fashion, they've gone from playing sweaty small dives all over the northwest and beyond (Ireland anyone?) to sharing the stage with some of the heaviest bands on earth. Not only have they rocked it with Biohazrd, Amon Amarth, Terror, Emmure, the Destro, Pro-Pain and more, but they've got two sick shows coming up in Portland: With Otep and Bury Your Dead on March 26th at the Satyricon and then they'll be sharing the Hawthorne Theater stage with Dillinger Escape Plan and Darkest Hour on April 11th! But most importantly, Proven has been selected, amongst thousands of unsigned bands from coast to coast, to become one of 20 finalists for the Scion No Label Needed Contest! And they need your help! Click here or on the "no label needed" image below to vote (once per day, so go back daily!) to help them become the winner! If they win, you will have helped the Oregon Underground move up on the map of glory. What's at stake? The winning band will be mentored by the members of Shadows Fall, record an EP produced by Machine (Lamb of God, Every Time I Die, Suicide Silence), shop for their stage and photo shoot clothing with Maria Brink (In This Moment) and Rob “Blasko” Nicholson (Ozzy) and receive advice from the likes of Ben Weinman of The Dillinger Escape Plan. Their website will be re-designed, their merch re-imagined and radio and press campaigns mounted to promote their EP by the best in their fields.
Plus, we've got a TON of new metal to get to, including High on Fire, Overkill, Carnifex, Orphaned Land, The Empire Shall Fall, Living Sacrifice, Heathen and Wrath & Rapture to name a few... Tune in Sunday night at 8pm!

The End Times with Blackie Lawless of W.A.S.P.January 24, 2010, 4:40 pm ![]() Blackie Lawless from W.A.S.P. has had his fair share of criticism. As a shock-rocker from the 80s, he made a name for himself by torturing women on stage with bizaare torture devices and throwing raw meat into his audience. These days, Lawless has backed off on the debauchery, found his way back to God, and has adopted a more subtle approach to getting his message across to his audience. That's not to say he still doesnt rock faces, he's just found a less freaky way of doing it. On his latest album, "Babylon", he's written some of the strongest tunes of his career and he's much more comfortable in his own skin than he ever has been before. I spoke with Blackie Lawless recently, and he had much to say about the inspiration behind his new album, his approaches to his live shows then and now, the music industry, rockstars, the origins of the name W.A.S.P. and more. Check it out below. Part One: On the inspiration behind his new album. LISTEN Part Two: Explaining his shock rock days and his approach to live shows now. LISTEN Part Three: The collapsing of the music industry and the fall of the rockstar. LISTEN Part Four: The story behind the letters. Why he won't perform Animal (F*&% Like a Beast) anymore. LISTEN Here's the end of the world clip for W.A.S.P. "Babylon's Burning":
